A MESSAGE FROM CARL RASO - LHO PRESIDENT

Welcome the Summer of 2026!

The year 2026 marks the 70th anniversary of the Loveladies Harbor Organization (LHO).

Loveladies began as a small ten-acre island in the bay adjacent to a US Lifesaving Station which was owned by a sportsman and hunter, Thomas Lovelady. It became officially designated as Loveladies in 1952.

Loveladies Harbor was developed by Lud Ullman and his partners Greg and Helen Silvermaster. All were known communists. They were WWII spies for the Soviet Union. During the war, Ullman worked in the Treasury Dept and Silvermaster in the Agricultural Dept.

In the 1950's they went before congressional hearings including Senator Joseph McCarthy. After 3 days of testifying behind closed doors, they were set free. Their testimony was never revealed.

In the 1950's they bought 250 acres which would later become Loveladies Harbor. They planned an “eden of waterways and open planned houses.”  They set about carving lagoon channels from the wetlands and then building houses on the "muck". They envisioned 100 feet of lagoon frontage and “a boat right at your back door". In a glassed-in office (now Michael Ryan Architects) they devised house plans. There were two models and both came with built-in wooden dining tables, known as "LUD" tables. These homes originally sold for $9,900 and now they are million-dollar teardowns. At the time, many buyers were Psychiatrists, prompting locals to call the harbor "couch cove."

Greg Silvermaster died in the 1960's and Lud Ullman in 1993, but their vision and legacy live on. So, this summer ENJOY the fruits of their labor … Loveladies Harbor, the lagoons, the sea, and the sun!
